Juanita’s Story Featured in the Riverwest Currents
Juanita and her daughter, Danielle, came to Meta House through the Families Come First program, which helps pregnant and post-partum women who struggle with substance abuse overcome their addictions and increase their capacity to keep their children safe. Digital Advocacy Workshop Gains Recognition for Empowering Meta House Graduates

July Meta Moments: Milestones toward Recovery Thursday, July 28th, 12:00 – 1:00 PM
When a woman comes to Meta House a team of counselors, family members, and supporters meets with her to map out a plan, helping her to succeed in her drug and alcohol treatment goals. Earning her first weekend pass home, enjoying visitations with children not in her care, obtaining her GED, moving into safe and affordable housing and securing employment – all of these accomplishments are milestones towards a woman’s new life in recovery.

Meta House is a 2011 Top Workplace
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, in collaboration with WorkPlaceDynamics, recently released a survey of Milwaukee-area Top Workplaces. Over 200 companies took part and Meta House received an Honorable Mention Award. The Top Workplaces program recognizes small, midsize, and large organizations that provide their employees with a great place to work. Meta House Clients Eating Local with the Help of Volunteers
Recently, a group of volunteers from Congregation Shir Hadash in Mequon, WI joined Meta House staff and residential clients in building and planting gardens on the north side of our parking lot. Our women and their children will be in charge of taking care of the vegetable gardens, and will also enjoy the produce at harvest time. Thank you to Congregation Shir Hadash for supporting Meta House clients and their children!
A Day for Meta House was a success!
On Friday, May 6th we held a breakfast, lunch, and evening reception at Discovery World for nearly 1,000 attendees. Our theme Celebrating Mothers. Rebuilding Families. told the story of the work we do helping pregnant women give birth to healthy babies, helping mothers become better parents, and helping mothers and children build strong bonds during the recovery process. BizTimes Nonprofit Weekly
In addition to our event at Discovery World, we held a social media campaign on YouTube and Facebook to help raise awareness and support for the mothers and children we serve. You can read an explanation of the campaign in this BizTimes Nonprofit Weekly article.
Our goal of reaching 750 “Likes” on our Facebook page was met during our breakfast event on Friday, so we increased the goal to 1,000 “Likes” by Mother’s Day and ended with 935! In addition, our YouTube views totaled 1,818 by the end of Mother’s Day, which, again, exceeded our goal of 1,500. Thank you to Manpower Group for donating $1,500 to match $1 per YouTube view, and WaterStone Bank for donating $1,500 toward our Facebook goal. And a big thank you to all of our supporters who helped us reach and surpass these goals!

Meta House Fundraiser at AJ Bombers
Twitter’s favorite Milwaukee restaurant hosted a fundraiser for Meta House on Friday, February 11th. The event helped raise awareness for the work Meta House does in the community, and we received $1 for every “Meta” Burger sold in addition to generous donations from customers. Dr. Francine FeinbergAwarded for “Putting Her Stamp on Metro Milwaukee”
In March, the United States Postal Service will be celebrating Women’s History Month by honoring women in the metro Milwaukee area who have had a positive impact on the community. Yoga Mala Benefits Meta House
September is National Yoga Month and the Milwaukee Yoga Teachers Group held an event that brought the community together, celebrated movement, music, and peace, and benefitted Meta House through donations of nearly $700 and generous contributions of personal care items for Meta House women. Meta House children received bicycles from Walmart for Independence Day Parade
The 2010 Independence Day Parade marked the first time children staying with their mothers at Meta House have been able to participate in the parade in Milwaukee’s Riverwest area. Walmart Stores in Milwaukee and Waukesha generously donated 9 children’s bicycles. Meta House is thankful to Walmart for donating bikes and helmets for this fun event! Meta House was honored to welcome a very special visitor to Meta House on June 16, 2010: the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Mr. Gil Kerlikowske. He toured our facilities, heard about our family treatment program, and enjoyed dinner with 3 Meta House women and their families. Caroline Anderson, public relations and advocacy coordinator at Meta House, spoke as a panelist during a seminar at the BizTech Conference & Expo on April 29 about how we are using social media.

Executive Director Dr. Francine Feinberg helps formulate national guidelines for gender-responsive treatment
Dr. Feinberg recently contributed to and was on the consensus panel for TIP 51. Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders. TIP 51, Addressing the Specific Needs of Women, reviews gender-specific research and best practices regarding the specific substance abuse treatment needs of women. This TIP provides practical clinical and administrative information to help respond to these treatment needs, including information about specific treatment issues and strategies across substance abuse treatment services.
