Meta House Leader Selected for National Advisory Panel

Meta House Executive Director, Dr. Francine Feinberg, has been invited by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to work with a team of national experts to advise the administration about the future of substance abuse and mental health treatment in women and girls.

The panel, which will convene from January through July, 2009 is comprised of experts in the mental health, substance abuse and prevention fields. They are charged with identifying key skills needed to provide effective mental health and substance abuse services that uniquely affect women and girls. The information gleaned from the panel will be used to inform policy makers, program developers, institutions of higher education and credentialing agencies.

SAMHSA is an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that supports recovery services and treatment for people with or at risk of mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Dr. Feinberg is an expert in the gender-responsive substance abuse treatment field for women. She has led Meta House, an internationally-recognized family treatment center, for more than 25 years. Dr. Feinberg is consulted extensively about the social, environmental, political, and economic contexts of women’s lives and how these external factors intersect with psychological, biological, and chemical factors in the development of and recovery from substance abuse and dependence in women.

Meta House Leader Responds to State’s Rank in National DUI Survey

In a recent editorial published in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Meta House Executive Director, Dr. Francine Feinberg, responded to survey results that list Wisconsin as having the most people who admitted to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Dr. Feinberg highlighted Wisconsin’s long and challenging relationship with alcohol abuse and the state’s alarming rate of child-bearing age women who binge drink, including 32 percent who admitted to drinking while pregnant.

Wisconsin’s problem, Dr. Feinberg wrote, “will need to be addressed on cultural, political, and practical levels, including the treatment of substance abuse. Alcohol and drug treatment has been clearly shown to be effective, yet Wisconsin fails on this account as well, with the highest rate of people actually in need of treatment for substance abuse who are not receiving it.”

Dr. Feinberg is an expert in substance abuse treatment and has served on local, state and federal task force and committees to address the issue of substance abuse treatment in Wisconsin. Read the full article.
